Longevity is really an undersold aspect of Mac IMO. I would also recommend them with not so tech savy individuals because if you have any issues you can just take it to the store and they generally trouble shoot for free.

My two year old MacBook Pro can't hold wifi for very long. Pretty useless at this point.

My daughter is a mechanical engineering major and she has had no issue with it running any of her engineering software or performing any required tasks.
